Special to the Observer
In a year and a half, Greensboro's Chris Daughtry has gone from a shocking fourth-place finish on "American Idol" to a Grammy nominee.
And how's this for vindication? He's the most popular and commercially successful male artist the series has ever produced.
On the eve of his band's sold-out Charlotte concert, here's a quick look at its amazing accomplishments:
On the charts
• Daughtry has sold 3.3 million copies of its self-titled album, which has become the fastest-selling debut in Soundscan history.• It charted back-to-back No. 1 Billboard hits with "Home" and "It's Not Over."
• The videos for "Home" and "It's Not Over" topped the countdowns on MTV's TRL and VSPOT, VH1's broadband video channel. "What I Want" also hit No. 1 on VSPOT.
At the podium
• Four recent Grammy nominations: Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for "Home"; Best Rock Song and Best Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for "It's Not Over"; and Best Rock Album for "Daughtry." The 50th Grammy Awards will be held Feb. 8.
• Two People's Choice Award nominations: Favorite Group and Favorite Rock Song ("Home"). The awards show airs Jan. 8.
• Three American Music Awards: Favorite Album, Breakthrough Artist and Adult Contemporary Artist.
On the road
• Daughtry's sold-out show at Ovens Auditorium marks his second trip to Charlotte with his band. It's his third since graduating from "American Idol."• It sold out tours in the U.S., Asia, Australia, the U.K., and Europe.
• The band will begin touring with Bon Jovi in February. (The closest the pairing will come to us is Atlanta, on April 30.)

http://blogs.usatoday.com/idolchatter/Daughtry passes 4 million; Idols tumble as overall sales drop Can't wait to dive into your comments from last night, but first, the Idol sales picture needs to be filled in. (A lot of other blogs are depending on me ... kidding.)
Not a lot of excitement in the Idol sales realm this week, although it was a lackluster week for album sales in general. Jordin stays in the top 20, falling 16-20 on the Billboard chart and selling 19,000 according to Nielsen SoundScan, a 15% drop. Her total is 697,000, meaning she'll pass Taylor next week, becoming No. 5 on the Idol champ debut album sales list.
Daughtry slides 15-23, selling 17,000, a 23% drop, for a grand total of ... 4.01 million -- which is pretty grand, all right.Carrie's Carnival Ride is up 32-28 but falls 11% in sales to 15,000 for a total of 2.04 million. Some Hearts is also up on the chart, 69-65 but drops 13% in sales to the mid-8,000s, totaling 6.39 million.
Josh (thought I was going to forget, didn't you?) falls 146-175, selling in the mid-3,000s, a 21% drop, for a total of 34,000.
Off-chart Idols follow in profusion.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DAUGHTRY SCORES 3rd RECORD-BREAKING #1 SINGLE WITH “FEELS LIKE TONIGHT”
FIRST ARTIST TO LAUNCH 3 #1 SINGLES FROM A DEBUT ALBUM;
WINDS UP BON JOVI TOUR AND BEGINS WORK ON NEW CD
(New York, NY) Grammy nominated 19/RCA recording artist DAUGHTRY continues to assault the record books, scoring their third #1 single with “Feels Like Tonight” soaring to the top of the Billboard Singles chart. DAUGHTRY is the first group to produce 3 #1 hit singles from a debut album, joining Nickleback as the only act to bank 3 #1s from one album. DAUGHTRY logged two previous #1 smashes with “It’s Not Over,” and “Home.” DAUGHTRY is also the first group to land 4 Top 5 Hits (from a debut effort) on the Adult Top 40 radio chart since the format was created in 1996.
DAUGHTRY the album keeps on breaking new ground, recently entering even more unprecedented territory by crossing the 4 million sales milestone. Incredibly, the album still reigns as the biggest selling artist release of the past two years – the fastest selling rock debut in soundscan history and one of the most prolific debuts ever! The group recently wound up its raved about sold-out tour with Bon Jovi (‘Daughtry casts his net wide’ wrote a critic from NY Newsday about his crowd-pleasing performance style - ‘he appeals to teenagers and to parents…to men and to women…hard rock with relentless vulnerability…’), and will begin to work on the follow-up to their award winning debut effort, which garnered 4 Grammy nominations, and nailed DAUGHTRY frontman, singer/songwriter Chris Daughtry and his group 3 American Music Awards earlier in the year, including ‘Favorite Breakthrough Artist.’
DAUGHTRY has also won a coveted songwriter award at the BMI Television Awards, and a People’s Choice Award for Favorite Rock song: “Home.”
Most recently, the band was honored to perform a live acoustic set at The Beatles REVOLUTION Lounge at Las Vegas’ Mirage in mid-April. All proceeds from the sold-out event were donated to the ONE Campaign (ONE.org) to fight the emergency of global AIDS and extreme poverty.
DAUGHTRY will be performing a handful of selected shows this summer as they begin work on the new album. A fifth single, “What About Now,” will hit radio on June 16. The song was also one of the more uplifting efforts on American Idol’s charitable endeavor, Idol Gives Back, with DAUGHTRY contributing a compelling video of their own inspiring journey to Africa which currently can be seen youtube, among other video outlets.

AMA write-up:
It makes perfect sense that an anonymous online music fan has best described what rocker Chris Daughtry's Phoenix-like ascension means to the ever-evolving rock n' roll canon. It's his intensity -- notes the insightful blogger -- a balm for an ailing industry, writing that Daughtry in a recording studio is akin "to putting a beat-up violin in the hands of a master." A "pure" and "soulful" balm, with even professional scribes concurring that "Daughtry dominates," according to USA Today. "Homeboy loves to rock" crows Rolling Stone -- but if the phenomenal impact and enduring legacy of the double-platinum-and-counting debut of Daughtry means anything -- it's how enthusiastically the wandering music listener has embraced rock's new standard bearer.
Use any measurement you like -- in an era of digitized, customized-shuffling music = wallpaper styling's, Daughtry has almost single-handedly given the genre back its heart, resurrecting an endangered species via the bluesy swagger of "What I Want," and the image-shredding angst of "Feels Like Tonight,"; restoring its nomadic longing for place on "Home," its righteous indignation on "It's Not Over." With signature ache and poise, the North Carolina native blends each hard-won attribute into a rousing mosaic for the ages. The Daughtry album is also forging unprecedented sales and chart breakthroughs -- affirming there is still gold to be mined, thank God, with a rugged voice and passionate songwriting instincts.
Tom Petty once said such a primal connection between a musician on top of his game and his fans can be so strong "you can actually hurt yourself up there and not know it." But the kind of "hurt" Daughtry has put on a famished music landscape is nothing short of astonishing: In just a few months of release, the celebrated disc has leaped more milestones faster and further than any rock debut in recent memory. Anointed as the quickest selling rock debut in Soundscan history, Daughtry became the #1 top selling album in the country not once, but twice, after debuting at #2 in November, 2006, moving upwards of 300,000 copies in the first week alone.
Emboldened by a collection of arena-tempered anthems and hand-crafted gems, Chris formed a band around the foundry of songs that make up Daughtry before any of the accolades rolled in -- hitting the road almost on instinct -- eager to share his hardscrabble journey -- his emotional diary of sorts -- with who else but his fans. Secure enough to become a passenger on such a revelatory train ride -- "You walk through a lot of doors for a moment like this," he says "I'm enjoying every minute," -- he has personified the heart and soul of this elusive rock allegory without sacrificing one combustible ion of his authenticity. A trait that has always been his calling card whether writing, singing, performing or bonding with his newly minted band with whom he also shares his success.
Scanning well over a million individual tracks digitally since Daughtry's debut, Chris always knew the secret of his connection with his fans was widening the circle surrounding his music no matter what medium of transfer. Whether he was interpreting other artists material or his own, his razor-sharp instincts told him the right band could take such a bond to even greater heights. "I'm a tough music fan myself. I'm not swayed easily, but one of the things I've always loved about great bands is you feed off of each other's confidence, build on each other's strengths and create an opportunity for something magical to happen every time you go out there," he notes. Daughtry is living proof of that edict, garnering rave reviews on the road, locking down what quickly became 2007's must-see show: "Daughtry clearly connects with the audience and it would seem to be only the beginning..." raved the San Francisco Chronicle.
What a beginning: The double-platinum juggernaut that is Daughtry has hovered in the Top 5 of the Billboard Top 200 Albums since its release, the first album since the 2006 phenomenon High School Musical soundtrack to log more than 9 weeks among the Top 3 albums, and the first rock band to achieve such a streak in the first 15 weeks of release since Creed in 2002. Daughtry is also the first rock band release in nearly 20 years -- since Bon Jovi's 1988 classic New Jersey -- to hit the top spot after debuting below #1.
Such flirtations with history are even more amazing when you consider how seamlessly Daughtry has engrained itself in the digital domain, pulling in over one million page views per week to their artist site www.daughtryofficial.com, with their album remaining a Top 10 staple on itunes since it's release. The debut single "Its Not Over," has conquered every digital, mobile, radio and video platform imaginable, parking at or near the top of every major music industry metric including #1s on the Adult Top 40 chart, on the Hot AC chart, the Billboard Top Singles chart. The video reigned at the top of VH1's enormously popular Top 20 Countdown show for two months running, as well as garnering most played status on MTV.
"The way it all has unfolded is everything an artist could ever ask for," says Chris. An understatement when you consider the challenges he laid down for himself before approaching the debut effort. "I knew going in that the album, the band, all of it had to start from my own vision. I've always known who I am and what kind of sound I wanted to get across, yet I never wanted to dictate any sort of path."
If it sounds tricky, consider the caliber of writers and musicians he huddled with to craft the creative dimensions of the debut album. Daughtry enlisted a hand-picked cadre of unique and respected rockers who inspired his own song craft, sonic mentors -- soon to become peers -- who were already part of his own interior experience. Talented collaborators like Brent Smith of Shinedown, Mitch Allan of SR-71, and Hinder producer Brian Howes. Throw in the fact that Chris enjoined each of them in furtive writing sessions while on the road on a previous tour, and you have a recipe for a project that still might have gone down the rabbit hole very quickly. "Looking back now," says Chris, "Sure, it was risky, but I never had the feeling that I was heading creatively somewhere where I shouldn't have been going."
Produced by Howard Benson (My Chemical Romance, All-American Rejects), the album thoroughly mines Daughtry's instinctive ability to get to the essence of a song, tapping into a sixth sense he possesses for delivering accessible music that also manages to remain uncompromising. Whether it's the proven "It's Not Over," or the probing "All These Lives," or another song that takes on a life of its own, the plaintive "Home," (which has found its own home as the contestant elimination theme on this year's American Idol), the Daughtry thread of extending boundaries, not shrinking from them, runs through every verse. "I've never believed a song has to have a rock edge, or be part of one particular genre to be viable," he adds. For "It's Not Over," which he collaborated on with Greg Wattenberg (Five For Fighting), it was the subject matter that moved him. "That idea that you keep doing the same thing thinking you are going to get a different result, still you keep trying."
It's been Chris' own willingness to pivot in the face of expected music industry protocol that has fueled most of his success, the same ethic powering the equally charged band Daughtry. The players: bassist Josh Paul from LA, drummer Joey Barnes from North Carolina, guitarist Brian Craddock from Virginia, and guitarist Josh Steely from San Diego all complement and calibrate the front man, embodying the kind of seasoned give-and- take not usually associated with a new band. Chris knew he had to commit to an intense audition process right from the start, determined to achieve that crucial bond between members. Daughtry zeroed in on the interpersonal chemistry and musical compatibility of the guys who would eventually eat, sleep and breathe Daughtry 24/7.
"The guys have worked out beyond even what I had envisioned. We've even been able to do some acoustic shows together because of the stage considerations, rolling with the punches on the road like a band does, and that's been such a revelation -- and so much fun, as well."
As always, Chris brings it back to the audience, whether talking about the live experience or the millions of supporters for Daughtry around the world that have helped carve the unprecedented trail they've blazed as a debut rock band. "It's such a blessing to receive all the great feedback and affection from the fans," he says.
"The online intensity, the way they sing along at our shows, the radio and video support -- I don't think the average person understands how crucial it is for a band to know you've got that net underneath you. To start out as a fan with a dream, and then to go from a struggling musician with the same hopes and aspirations as so many others and to be able to fulfill some of those dreams, well, I feel like we're all part of this incredible movement. I'm so aware of what it took to get here. I can't help but appreciate what an honor it is to keep it rolling."

Latest Milestone update from Wiki.
History
[edit] 2006: American Idol and Debut
Former American Idol season 5 fourth-place finisher Chris Daughtry stated that he would form a new band after turning down Fuel's offer to make him their lead singer.[9] On July 10, 2006 it was announced that Chris had signed with 19 Entertainment and RCA Records, which holds contracts with fellow American Idol finalists Kelly Clarkson and Kellie Pickler.
Chris is a singer-songwriter himself and has collaborated with several other songwriters, such as Live's Ed Kowalczyk, Fuel's Carl Bell, 3 Doors Down's Brad Arnold, Matchbox Twenty's Rob Thomas, SR-71's Mitch Allan,[10] Shinedown's Brent Smith, and Nickelback's Chad Kroeger.
Chris and members of his label held auditions for the band DAUGHTRY and chose 5 members for the band: Jeremy Brady, 21, a guitarist and at this point no longer in the band; Josh Steely, 36, as lead guitarist; Josh Paul, 29, as bassist who also played for Suicidal Tendencies; Joey Barnes, 30, as drummer, who also sang for Suicide Darlings. Two of the band members hail from North Carolina - Joey, whom Chris had known for some time, and Jeremy, who was introduced to him a month before the audition. Steely and Paul are both from California.[11] The decision was made to name the band "Daughtry" in order to keep name recognition. In an interview, Chris said, "We could have came out with a really obscure name, but coming from a TV show and having name recognition, it was easier just to go with my last name."
The band's self-titled debut album was produced by Howard Benson and was released by 19 Entertainment and RCA Records on November 21, 2006. Chris played a big part in the album, particularly in songwriting. He had a part in writing/cowriting all but two songs on the album (Feels Like Tonight and What About Now). Chris fully wrote Home, Breakdown and Gone. [10] Hit writers Dr. Luke and Max Martin contributed to the album. Session drummer Josh Freese played drums on all the tracks for the album. The album's first single, "It's Not Over", debuted on the radio on December 6, 2006, after being delayed from a planned September release.[10] The song was an instant success, shooting up the Billboard Hot 100 reaching #4 and hitting the top 3 in several other charts.
[edit] 2007 - 2008: Continued Success
Jeremy Brady's departure from Daughtry was announced on January 26, 2007. Soon after, Brian Craddock, 31, from Virginia, became the band's rhythm guitarist. In interviews, Chris and Brian have discussed having known each other when Chris was still a member of Absent Element.[12]
The second single from the album, "Home" peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100, after debuting at #83 weeks ahead of its official release to radio. The song was also the official "kick off" song on sixth season of American Idol, played after a contestant was voted off the show, also the case during season 5 of Australian Idol. The Brazilian version of Idol, called dolos Brazil, used this song as well in its second season.
The album's third single, "What I Want", was released to rock radio on April 23, 2007. The song features Slash on lead guitars. It has peaked at number 6 on the rock charts. The song was announced to be a playable song on Guitar Hero: On Tour for the Nintendo DS.
Their song "There and Back Again" is the official theme song for WWE Backlash 2007.
On MySpace, Daughtry is on page 8 on the most played artists with plays over 29 Million
Their debut album was certified Triple Platinum on June 21, 2007. It has since reached Quadruple Platinum.
The band's fourth single "Over You" was released July 24, 2007. The band performed this single live on Good Morning America on June 1, 2007.[13]
"Crashed", the album's fifth single, was released to rock stations on September 10, 2007. It has also been used in a commercial for LEGO Bionicles. The song was also performed on the Pre-Race show on ABC for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Chevy Rock and Roll 400.
DAUGHTRY has appeared on Now that's what I call music 5 times, with the songs It's Not Over, Home, Over You, Feels Like Tonight & What About Now.
The band were nominated for 4 Grammy Awards in 2008, in these categories: Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, Best Rock Album, Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal
The album's sixth single, "Feels Like Tonight", was released on January 8, 2008. The video debuted in January and the song was used for the 2007 WWE Tribute to the Troops.
It took Daughtry 81 weeks to get out of the top 50 on the billboard 200.
According to billboard.com, Daughtry has had 20 #1 hits around the world.
Billboard single reviews editor Chuck Taylor wrote about single "What About Now" in June 2008: "Boy, this guy means business. Chris Daughtry has scored five top 10 hits at top 40, rock and adult top 40 since 2006, including two among the five biggest "American Idol" finalist hits ever (both Grammy Award-nominated): "Home," with 11 No. 1 weeks at AC, and "It's Not Over," with nine atop adult top 40. "What About Now" is yet another overachieving rock ballad with a savvy lyric about saving a troubled relationship, co-written by Ben Moody. Daughtry's dexterous voice is ever recognizable, while production from rock hero Howard Benson masterfully blends a blast of guitars and percussion with a slick, runaway hook. "Idol" aligned Daughtry with the industry's best, but it's hard to imagine he wouldn't have found notoriety on his own. If this keeps up, the association with "AI" will be a mere footnote."
On the 95th week, DAUGHTRY returned to the Top 40.
DAUGHTRY has almost stayed in the top 100 for 2 years, He only has another week to go, He currently at #94, the lowest he has ever been.
[edit] 2008 - 2009: Second Album
Entertainment Weekly announced Chris Daughtry will release his second album in Spring 2009, and announced that it's going to be a very big rock album. Chris has also stated that the band has been writing and recording.
Chris Daughtry has announced he has written over 30 new songs for his album, and is working with Ryan Tedder from OneRepublic[14]
A Deluxe edition of Daughtry's self-titled album was released on September 9th.
Along with the original CD, this expanded CD/DVD package features four bonus tracks, including acoustic versions of "What About Now," "It's Not Over," and "Home," plus a cover of Foreigner's "Feels Like the First Time". The DVD contains all five of Daughtry's music videos, two rarely seen live clips, and exclusive on the road footage.
A photo shows that Daughtry is doing a collaboration with American Idol Season 1 winner Kelly Clarkson. It is still being rumored though.
[edit] Tour
The band has been touring non-stop since January 2007. They have performed across the U.S. and Canada, along with shows in the UK, Germany, and Singapore. They opened for Nickelback for a brief stint, Puddle of Mudd, and Finger Eleven and have featured 12 Stones, Cinder Road, Small Town Sleeper, Day Of Fire and Eve To Adam as opening acts. On May 27, 2007, the band performed during the Indianapolis 500 Pre-Race show on ABC, and headlined the 2007 Summerfest at the Marcus amphitheater in Milwaukee, WI with a crowd of more than 15,000 on July 6.
Their upcoming fall dates include performing in Rockford, Illinois after a brief stint at Carthage College of Kenosha, Wisconsin. They also played shows in Australia, England and across Europe for the first time and opened for Bon Jovi for several shows in November. They were featured as the opening act during Bon Jovi's "Lost Highway" Tour. The band began a sold out tour with Bon Jovi on February 18, 2008 all the way through the end of April. Chris even joined Bon Jovi on stage to share lead vocals with Jon during the song "Blaze of Glory". Some of the biggest purses for the Bon Jovi/Daughtry shows have made over 4 million dollars. Daughtry's tour alone in 2007 raked in some 10 million dollars in the shows they headlined.
Currently, the band has started performing new songs that Chris has written with big names such as Rob Thomas ("You're In My Hands"). Some of these songs are "Where You're Standing", "Back to Me","You Don't Belong" and "Long Way". These songs may or may not be on the second album.
They were guests at the 2008 Democratic and Republican National Conventions.
