Daughtry buys house in Oak Ridge

If Chris Daughtry wants privacy, he has moved to the right place -- sort of.
Daughtry, the chrome-dome rocker from "American Idol," recently relocated from tiny McLeansville in eastern Guilford County to Oak Ridge, a slightly bigger town in the northwest part of the county.
Last week, several folks in Daughtry's new high-dollar neighborhood hesitated to talk about their new neighbors.
"They're very normal, and very nice, and a very sweet family; that's about all I'll say," said one neighbor who refused to give her name. "I just want to honor their privacy."
"No comment," said another neighbor who also wanted to remain anonymous. "They really want to be very private."
But the relocation is hardly a secret in Oak Ridge, population 4,000.
Steve Spalding, who works in the summer child care program at Oak Ridge Elementary, heard the news from someone who read it in a local publication. At the Oak Ridge Swim Club, 15-year-old Michael Vaughn said the family's move was announced at his church a couple of Sundays ago. Another Oak Ridge resident, Lynn Jacoby, heard the news from neighbors who are big "Idol" fans.
"I think it speaks well for Oak Ridge," said Jacoby, a transplant from Massachusetts. "It's a good town with good schools, and a good area to be in."
Spalding believes local folks will give Daughtry the breathing room he wants. After all, he's not the only high-profile resident in the area. NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick lives nearby.
"If you look at the houses here, and the type of people here, they're very upscale business people, and they're going to go about their daily life," Spalding says.
