QUOTE
"... I hereby grant to Producer the unconditional right throughout the universe in perpetuity to use, simulate or portray (and to authorize others to do so) or to refrain from using, simulating or portraying, my name, likeness (whether photographic or otherwise), voice, singing voice, personality, personal identification or personal experiences, my life story, biographical data, incidents, situations and events which heretofore occurred or hereafter occur, including without limitation the right to use, or to authorize others to use any of the foregoing in or in connection with the Series ...

man, talk about ownership. are they really serious with the "throughout the universe" statement (that's pretty funny!)?! they literally own all of the idols whether they want it or not! go figure. biggrin.gif
travis
geez...yeah say strict, absent element site had to remove anything and everything that chris was on.

they might as well say, "I hereby grant the Producers my soul..."

"...personal experiences, my life story, biographical data, incidents, situations and events which heretofore occurred or hereafter occur,"

They own their personal experiences and life story? They own incidents that happened before and after Idol?

If some of you don't remember, at the first concert press conference, the BOSTON GLOBE and NEW HAMPSHIRE LEADER walked out because they were told they could not print any photos without approval. They tried to tell the press what photos they could print. That's incredible.

That article is from 2002 but it is worth reading.

Since 19 and Fox have declined to respond to questions about their contract with Clarkson and the other finalists, or the extent to which they control their careers, perhaps the best place to look is the public record.

Before the Sept. 11 anniversary, the New York Times reported that Clarkson wanted to withdraw from a scheduled appearance singing "The Star-Spangled Banner" at a commemoration held at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. Friends and critics had reportedly questioned turning a somber occasion of national mourning into a promotional opportunity. Clarkson was quoted as saying, "I think it is a bad idea ... If anybody thinks I'm trying to market anything, well, that's awful ... I am not going to do it."

In the same Times story, Tom Ennis of 19 Management said that "he would allay Ms. Clarkson's concerns and that she would sing the anthem on Sept. 11." She sang.

From the article --

If contestants reveal anything to anyone about the workings of the show or the contract they signed, they're liable for damages "in excess of $5 million." Their recording, management and merchandising companies, needless to say, are all owned by 19 Group -- a fundamental conflict of interest familiar to anyone who has studied the machinations of the music biz.

So,will Chris have to abide by a contract this strict with his recording contract with them? I wouldn't think so with him having such a good entertainment lawyer. Also, does anyone know when he is no longer obligated to this contract?

American Idol is the devil and they're signing over their souls

Here is an Aug. 6, 2006 article --

http://www.charlotte.com/mld/observer/ente...ts/15210277.htm

One rumor circulating online put a performer's fee somewhere between $1,000 and $5,000 per concert. But their road income as a percentage of the tour's overall revenues would be comparatively small. Arena-scale performers who cut their own deals, for example, command six- and sometimes seven-figure guarantees for a night's work.

Get a good lawyer before you sign anything kids!

I remember reading that article awhile back. What I found really interesting was an article that linked to it (from last season) that said
"all 24 semifinalists, including Mario, signed a contract preventing them from signing with another label or company until three months after the "American Idol" winner is crowned"
Here is a link to that article..hope it works, I'm new to all this:

anyway, I thought maybe that is the real reason he did not sign with Fuel????[u]

I believe that the real reason he did not sign with Fuel is that he knew the exposure he got would let him be the leader of his own band. They needed him much more than he needed them. He will be bigger than Fuel, much bigger.

I'm definately not saying that I think he should have signed with Fuel. I just thought that made it sound like there was not the option. He was barred. That's all, I'm actually glad that he is not the frontman for Fuel. cool.gif

I should have added in the previous response that I agree it would have presented quite a legal challenge if he wanted to sign with Fuel.
